About Avolve Wellness
Kelley Colihan Robertson, Former Journalist, NBC-HWC
Well friends it’s time for the third act.
After three decades in national and international news, (20 years at CNN, time at WebMD, NBC Radio, ABC News and NPR) I am now writing a book that interviews nonspeaking Autistics. It’s time we heard their voices. I also am the main caregiver to my adult Autistic son.
We also do some cool things every now and then like songwriting sessions for nonspeakers- here is our first song and we may do an album at some point. https://youtu.be/4dYycts3I3M?si=ZHM0RIUW_T9UU8r3)
Still meditating, taking care of my health, the people in my life, fur babies and many indoor and outdoor plants.
I will be using this site mainly to share my blog, which will focus on shifting the misunderstanding society still has when it comes to individuals who use text-based communication methods, many of whom are Autistic, but also with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and other neurodevelopmental ways of being.
We call these folks Spellers, they are often nonspeaking, minimally speaking or unreliably speaking. They chose to poke a letter board or keyboard as they reveal their inner thoughts and intelligence. Imagine being “in there” but having a body that does not do what you want it to do and not having a way to get your thoughts out.
That is now changing as the world begins to listen.
Come along, spread the word- nonspeaking does not equal nonthinking.
